The Yarn
I’m using one of my favorite cotton yarns, Dishie for this moss stitch tutorial. You can use any yarn to crochet this one.
This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn, but this stitch works well in any weight yarn with the appropriate hook size of course.
The Stitch
The moss stitch is a great stitch that’s been around a while, which means it is also known by a lot of other names. Some of those names (but probably not all) are granite stitch, linen stitch, and woven stitch.
It’s such a popular stitch pattern I think because it’s a simple combination of single crochet stitches and chains. So simple and so pretty too!

Notes
Place a stitch marker in the ch 1 at the beginning of each row to help you easily identify it.
Pattern
Chain to an odd number. For this tutorial I chain to 15.
Row 1. Skip the first chain and sc in the 2nd ch from hook
Row 1. (cont.) Sc in each ch across, you'll end with an even number of stitches. Turn your work.
Row 2. Ch 1, this counts as a stitch here and throughout, so skip the very first sc, and place a sc in next stitch, marked here by the orange yarn needle, place the stitch marker in the ch 1, and move it up each row.
Row 2. (cont.)Sc in next st *{Ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st} continue to repeat the instructions from *{ } across to the end of the row, turn.
Row 3. Ch 1 (keep marking the ch 1 to help you remember it's a stitch), skip first stitch and work into the ch 1 sp, marked here by the orange yarn needle, sc in this ch sp
Row 3. (cont.) Ch 1, sk next sc, *{sc in next ch sp, ch 1, sk next sc} rep from * to end of row, place the last sc in the turning chain (the chain 1 with the stitch marker),turn.
Row 4. Ch 1, sc in first ch sp, *{ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch sp} rep from * across until there are 2 sts left, sk the next sc and place a sc in the turning chain, turn.
Repeat Row 4 until your work measures the desired height.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
