Tuscan Charm Cowl a Free Crochet Cowl Pattern

Get warm and cozy with the Tuscan Charm Cowl pattern. The free chunky crochet cowl pattern includes stripes and texture rows.

The Tuscan Charm Beanie gets a matching chunky cowl. This wool blend yarn is so squishy it’s a delight to wear and work with.

I love how the stripes contrast in these colors. And I’m a big fan of post stitches so there’s just a lot love about this cowl pattern.

It’s definitely my coziest make of late. The nice long length means it keeps more than just my neck warm.

Yarn

This chunky yarn is Lion Brand’s Hue + Me. The colors I chose are Rose Water + Spicy.

These are the same colors I use in the Tuscan Charm Beanie. I swapped the color placement on the cowl though.

I love how squishy and warm this #5 bulky weight yarn is around my neck. All the colors of Hue + Me yarn are designed to work well together. So mix and match to your heart’s desire.

You can certainly use another #5 bulky weight yarn for this cowl pattern. I’d recommend Color Made Easy.

I used Color Made Easy in the Ava Blanket crochet pattern. These colors paired really well too.

Stitch

The Tuscan Charm Cowl features double crochet stitches and eye catching post stitches.

The FPdc-front post double crochet creates the textured rows. The double crochet stitch on alternating rows define the stripes.

Color Work

I includ some tips in the Notes section about the color work for this cowl.

MC-or main color is the color you start crocheting with on Rnd 1. In the sample pictures I use Spicy (rust).

For the second round, you’ll switch to the CC-contrasting color. My contrast color is Rose Water (pink).

If you’d like more info and tips on crocheting color work, check out my blog post on Color Changing Tips. These tips went with the Corner to Corner crochet blanket in the post, but they’re still helpful!

If you’ve never done color work in crochet before, you can still crochet this cowl.

I love the Abundance Cardigan from DoraDoes. It’s so pretty and features another one of my favorites stitches.

I really love the size of this cowl. It’s like wearing an extra layer, but easier.

Materials

  • 274yds/250m of #5 bulky weight yarn, pictured in Lion Brand’s Hue + Me colors Rose Water + Spicy, (137yds/125m) each.
  • 8mm crochet hook, or hook needed to meet gauge
  • yarn needle
  • scissors
  • measuring tape

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  2. Pictured is MC-main color in Spicy and CC-contrast color in Rose Water.
  3. Color changes are for the entire rnd, except rnd 3-you will change colors inbetween stitches, throughout the rnd.
  4. Color changing tip: before the last movement of last stitch before color change, drop the first color and pick up the second color, finishing the stitch in the new color.
  5. Carry you colors through the rnd and up the rnd to minimize weaving in ends. You can see more in this tutorial.
  6. Stitch multiple is 3.
