Crochet Ribbing with Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet Stitches

Sharing is caring!

As I have recently been using this type of ribbing in several patterns, I thought I would create a tutorial and share it with you.

Besides being useful for my patterns, this technique can be used to start hats or sweaters. It’s a great crochet technique to add to your skills.

The Yarn

In this tutorial I’m using my favorite Clover hook, a 6mm (J) and Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in Melon Sorbet. I love the 10 ball bundle sale they have on LoveCrafts for the Paintbox yarns-their colors are amazing. Any yarn weight and corresponding hook size can be used for this ribbing stitch.

I created a video tutorial since post stitches are one of those that is just easier to understand by watching! Below I’ve also included written instructions, if you prefer.

Practice Swatch

To begin your double crochet ribbing you’ll need to start with a row of dc. Your stitch multiple is 2, plus 2 for the foundation chain. To crochet a practice swatch follow the pattern below.

Row 1. Fdc 10 or Ch 12 and dc in the 3rd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn.

Row 2. Ch 3, *{fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st} rep from * to one st left, dc in last st, turn. (10 sts)

Row 3 and on-Rep Row 2 for desired length.

I hope this tutorial was helpful!
