Lunette Sun Hat Cotton Crochet Hat Pattern

Sharing is caring!

The Lunette Sun Hat is a free crochet pattern in sizes for the whole family. This hat features a solid top down construction with v-stitch detail on the sides.

When we crochet for summer often we use cotton yarns, or other lightweight yarns. A sun hat is a great summer crochet project that’s quick and useful!

Below is the full written pattern for the Lunette Sun Hat in sizes Preemie through Large Adult. There is also a full video tutorial for this pattern on my YouTube channel.

The detail on the sides is the crochet v-stitch. I love how adding this bit of openness allows for more air flow.

The Yarn

For this sun hat I choose a cotton yarn, Lion Brand 24/7. I love the saturated colors available.

This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn, 100% mercerized cotton. You can substitute any #4 yarn if you like, even an acrylic yarn.

I also use Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton in Spunky Print for the adult size version of this hat. This is another favorite since it’s so soft.

Adult size crochet sun hat in cream.

These sun hats crochet up in just one ball of yarn, or less for the small baby sizes. I use a 5mm crochet hook for the hat pattern.

Just be sure to check gauge for the best fit in your hat.

Adding the brim is a must in a sun hat. And it’s easy to do with simple increases.

Girl is teal sun hat with bow.

Threading the bow through the last row of v-stitches really adds a sweet detail for the little ones.

Materials

  • #4 worsted weight yarn pictured in Lion Brand 24/7 Yarn (100% Mercerized Cotton, 3.5 oz/100g, 186 yd/170m) color: jade + goldenrod; 1 ball each
  • 5mm (H) hook, or hook needed to meet gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

1” x 1” = 4.5 sc x 4 rows

Notes

  1. The crochet sun hat is worked in the round, from the top down. Each round is continuous. It’s helps to mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker. This is where the next round will start. Continue to move your stitch marker up to the first stitch of each round.
