Front Post Half Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial
Learn how to crochet the front post half double crochet stitch. This stitch creates a cozy textured fabric, especially when alternated with the back post half double crochet stitch.
FPhdc = front post half double crochet is the crochet abbreviation for this stitch.
This step by step tutorial includes photos and written instructions. If you’re familiar with other post stitches, then this one is made the same way.
You work around the post of the stitch, instead of in the top. With post stitches, it helps to remember that “front” and “back” refer to the starting position of your hook.
So in front post stitches, we start our hook in the front. With back post stitches, we’ll start with our hook positioned in the back.

Post Stitches
Post stitches create a very textured surface when alternated. These are the stitches used to create that waffle like texture that makes such cozy blankets.
You don’t always have to alternate post stitches though. For instance, in the Matteo Scarf a textured crochet scarf pattern (with matching Hat and Gloves) I alternate post stitches and regular double crochets.
This combination creates a similar texture to the Alpine stitch. I use this stitch in the Emilia a cozy and textured earwarmer pattern.
I used the front post half double crochet stitch many moons ago when I made the Lion Brand scarflette pattern. I designed the Vignola a women’s crochet beret pattern to go with it. I just love the vintage vibe of this crochet set.
Materials
- any weight yarn, I’m using Simply Chunky a #5 bulky weight yarn
- a hook to match your yarn, I’m using my 5mm US size H Peach Odyssey crochet hook
- yarn needle
- scissors
- measuring tape

Notes
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- You’ll need to start with a row of stitches in order to make a post stitch. I start with half double crochets, but you can use almost any stitch.

Front Post Half Double Crochet
Learn how to crochet the front post half double crochet stitch. Create highly textured fabrics with this warm and cozy stitch.
Materials
- Any weight yarn, I'm using Simply Chunky, a #5 bulky weight yarn.
Tools
- Crochet hook to match your yarn. I'm using a 5mm Peach Odyssey hook.
Instructions
- Start with a row of regular half double crochet stitches: fhdc 15 or ch 16 and hdc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn.
- Ch 1, hdc in same st
- To make a front post half double crochet, yarn over and insert hook from front to back, between post of stitch
- Slide hook across back of stitch and bring it back out the front, on the other side of the post
- Yarn over and pull through, around the back of the post and back to the front
- Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. This completes one FPhdc or front post half double crochet stitch.
- You can get this texture by alternating between FPhdc and BPhdc stitches.
