A great increase stitch for the knit side of your work is the M1R. This increase method makes a twisted stitch. And it doesn’t leave a visible hole. It’s an easy way to increase in knitting projects like sweaters, hats and sock knitting patterns.

A make one stitch increase changes leaning direction depending on how you knit it. The m1L increase is a left-leaning increase that’s knit through the back leg. The difference between is in how you knit them. The m1r is knit through the front, knit wise.

Knit to where you will increase.

Find the horizontal bar between the last stitch you knit which is on your right needle, and the next stitch on your left needle.

Insert your left hand needle under the strand from the back to the front.

Then insert the tip of the right needle through the front loop, knitwise. This can be a bit tight.

Then knit it.

Instructions

  1. First knit to where you will increase. Here I knit to the stitch marker, and slip it on to my right hand needle.
  2. Second locate the horizontal strand of yarn between the stitches.
  3. Pick up the bar of yarn with your left-hand needle tip from the back to the front.Bar picked up from back to from on knitting needle.
  4. Insert right-hand needle tip into the front leg, as if to knit.
  5. Wrap the yarn over your right needle counter clockwise
  6. Pull yarn through to knit it.
  7. Slide the new stitch off the left needle and on to the right needle.
  8. You have increased by one stitch!

Notes

Remember m1R is knit through the front of the stitch and m1L is knit through the back loop.
