How To Make A Long Double Crochet (ldc) Tutorial

Sharing is caring!

Learn how to make the long double crochet stitch (ldc) in this step by step video tutorial. These are made the same way regular double crochet stitches are with one difference—you pull them up longer. Not to be confused with the extended double crochet where you start the stitch with an extra chain and then make a normal dc.

In this swatch you can see how much taller the current row is than the previous row. While normally you want to keep your tension even so that the first row and last row are the same height, here I wanted to demonstrate how much higher you can pull those loops. The initial chain we’re starting with keeps that beginning row shorter, but you can skip 5-6 chains to start with taller stitches, if you like.

I use the long dc stitch in my Ottobre Shawl and it’s sandwiched between other stitches to create a unique stitch pattern. Get the free pattern for the Ottobre shawl here.

Grab any yarn and appropriate size hook and make it with me. I’m using my Furls ergonomic size G 4mm with #4 medium yarn.

Materials

  • Any weight yarn, here I'm using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn.

Tools

  • Hook size that's compatible with your yarn. I'm using my 4 mm US size G Furls metal.

Instructions

  1. Chain to any number. For this foundation chain I make 16.
  2. Skip the first 3 chain stitches and work into the next ch. The skipped chains here are our turning chain and don't count as a stitch. You can skip more if you want a taller ldc.
  3. Note that I've turned my chain over and am working into the back bump.
  4. Yarn over and insert your hook into the chain.
  5. Yarn over and pull up a long loop. Pull up the loops on your hook 1 – 2 inches tall, depending on your preference.
  6. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook.
  7. Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on your hook. One long double crochet made.
  8. Repeat steps 4 – 7 in each chain across the row then turn your work.
  9. To start Row 2 chain 4, or to the number of chains that gets you to the desired height. These chains count as the first stitch of the row here.
  10. In the next stitch rep steps 4 – 7, continue in each stitch to the end of the row.
  11. Rep steps 4 – 10 for desired length.
