This ear warmer is knit with Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick & Quick which makes for an ultra cozy and warm project. And that super bulky yarn knits up quickly too.

Materials

  • 25yd/23m-35yd/32m of #6 super bulky weight yarn; pictured in Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (80% Acrylic; 20% Wool, 87 yd/80m, 5 oz/140 g); color: Fossil; 1 ball, or Toddler (25yd/23m), Child (28yd/26m), Teen/Sm Adult (32yd/29m), M/L Adult (35yd/32m) comparable yarn.
  • 9mm (US Size 13) needles, yarn needle, measuring tape, scissors

Notes

  1. This ear warmer is knit flat and seamed.
  2. You can use any cast on method you are comfortable with for this pattern. 
  3. For best result check gauge before beginning.

Finished Dimensions

(4”/10cm) wide by: Toddler (16”/40.5cm), Child (18”/45.5cm), Teen/Sm Adult (20”/51cm), M/L Adult (21”/53cm).

Fit

Pattern has negative ease of 2″/5cm where the finished ear warmer is smaller than the head circumference and stretches to fit. 

To fit age (head circumference): Toddler (18″/46cm)Child (20″/51cm), Teen/Sm Adult (22″/56cm), M/L Adult (23″/58.5cm).

Adjustments

To adjust the width of your ear warmer, you will need a multiple of 7 for the main repeat, plus 4 for the edge stitches-divided in 2 on either said of the main stitch pattern.

To change the length, adjust the number of rows you repeat. Stop after a row 2 rep.

Instructions

  1. CO 11 = (4”/10cm) wide
    Row 1. (RS) K2, P2, K1, P1, K1, P2, K2
  2. Row 2. K4, P3, K4
  3. Rep rows 1-2 until work measures:
  4. Toddler (16”/40.5cm)
  5. Child (18”/45.5cm)
  6. Teen/Sm Adult (20”/51cm)
  7. M/L Adult (21”/53cm).
  8. This is the "right side" of the fabric.Right side of knit ear warmer fabric.
    *Please note sample in tutorial pictures has 1 less edge stitch on either side and ear warmer has not yet been blocked.
  9. Finishing
  10. BO.
  11. Cut yarn and leave a long tail for seaming.
  12. On wrong side, match short ends.Fold in half, matching the short ends together.
  13. Fold those ends in half. Fold ends together and fold in half again for seaming.
  14. Sew through all four layers, in a zig zag.
    Sew through all layers with arrow zig zags.
  15. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
  16. Turn right side out.

I must be missing something, I've read through the pattern several times and cannot understand why we have four layers to sew through when it seems like it should just be two. I expect it may have something to do with "folding those ends in half", that is very heavy yarn to fold in half and sew through. Usually with headbands I use a provisional cast on and do a three needle bind off to join the ends, but it does not seem that will work here.

Hi Lisa, There are four layers because yes the ends are folded together to create the cinched look. But you can also use your way with the three needle bind off if you prefer!
