How to Crochet a Triangle

Learn how to crochet a triangle. In this tutorial I’ll cover the two basic ways of crocheting a triangle.

To create the triangle shape in crochet you can either crochet a flat triangle or crochet a a center out triangle.

In the crochet triangle pattern I include how to crochet a triangle starting with the base and decreasing to a tip, and starting with a tip and increasing to the base.

Notes

In this tutorial I use the single crochet, but you can easily crochet this triangle with double crochet too.

The triangle pattern in rows (both of them) includes a row of single crochets between rows of either increases or decrease. This creates a gradual, taller triangle.

To crochet a triangle with sharper angles, skip the regular rows and either increase or decrease every row.

Materials

  • Any weight yarn. I'm using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn in these pictures.

Tools

  • A crochet hook to match your yarn. I chose Odyssey 6mm US Size J-10 crochet hook here.

Instructions

  1. How to Crochet a Triangle with Decreases
  2. Chain 10Chain for crochet triangle.
  3. Sc in the 2nd ch from your hook and in each chain across, turn. (9 sts)Single crochet bottom of triangle.
  4. Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc2tog, Decrease to bring in crochet triangle.sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in last st, turn. (7 sts)Decreases on both ends to form crochet triangle.
  5. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (7 sts)
  6. Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog, sc in last st, turn. (5 sts)
  7. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (5 sts)
  8. Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc3tog, sc in the last st, turn. (3 sts)Decrease middle three stitches.
  9. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (3 sts)
  10. Ch 1, sc 3tog.
  11. If you would like to add a border around the triangle, then Ch 1, sc in the same st.
  12. Turn the corner and sc evenly down the side.
  13. At the corner, place a sc, ch 1, sc in the same space.
  14. Turn the corner and sc across the bottom.
  15. At the next corner, place a sc, ch 1, sc in the same space.
  16. Turn the corner and sc up the other side.
  17. Join the first sc with a sl st.
  18. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
  19. How to Crochet A Triangle With Increases
  20. Ch 2, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, turn. (1 st)
  21. Ch 1, place 2 sc in the same st, turn. (2 sts)
  22. Ch 1, place 2 sc in the same st and 2 sc in the next st, turn. (4 sts)
  23. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (4 sts)
  24. Ch 1, sc in the same st, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sc in the last st, turn. (6 sts)
  25. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (6 sts)
  26. Ch 1, sc in the same st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the last st, turn. (8 sts)
  27. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across, turn. (8 sts)
  28. Ch 1, sc in the same st, 2 sc in the next, 1 sc in each st until there are 2 sts left, 2 sc in the next st, and 1 sc in the last st, turn. (10 sts)
  29. Keep repeating the last 2 rows until your triangle is as tall and wide as you like.
  30. To add a border, follow steps 11-18.
  31. How to Crochet a Triangle in the Round
  32. Start with a magic circle, or ch 3 and sl st to form a ring.
  33. In the circle place 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc, ch 1, sl st to the first sc to join the round.
  34. Sc in first st, place marker in first st, sc in next st, *(place a sc, ch 1, sc all in the ch 1 sp, sc in each of next sc sts) rep * again, place sc, ch 1, sc all in last ch 1 sp.
  35. Sc in first st, continue moving the stitch marker to the first st of each round, *(sc in each st until the next ch 1 sp, place sc, ch 1, sc in the ch 1 sp) rep from * around, sc in last st.
  36. Sc in first st, continue moving the stitch marker to the first st of each round, *(sc in each st until the next ch 1 sp, place sc, ch 1, sc in the ch 1 sp) rep from * around, sc in each st to end.
  37. Continue to rep last round until your crochet triangle is to your desired size.
  38. To finish it off, sl st twice, or use an invisible join.
  39. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Notes

You can crochet a triangle with these instructions with single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet stitches.
