Easy Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern: Ava Blanket

Learn how to crochet this easy chunky crochet blanket. The Ava Blanket is crocheted in simple squares of half double crochets. This crochet blanket can be customized to compliment any decor.

The free crochet blanket pattern includes step by step tutorial. This chunky blanket pattern is perfect for beginners or any crocheter who enjoys an easy blanket to crochet.

Each crochet square is worked in flat rows. As written, the blanket pattern makes a 20″ square. You can easily crochet a variety of blanket sizes by crocheting more or less squares.

The Ava Chunky Crochet Blanket crocheted with six 20″ squares makes a cozy 40″ x 60″ throw size. Mix and match the crochet squares to get the perfect color combination for your home.

Each square crochets up with one ball of Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy. This #5 bulky yarn crochets up quick and cozy for this blanket pattern.

Blanket Sizes

To crochet a chunky baby blanket work up four 20″ squares and you’ll have a 40″ x 40″ baby blanket. I love how crocheting these squares individually allows you to get a beautiful blanket suited just to the room or decor.

If you want to crochet a larger blanket, crochet more squares. Nine 20″ squares will give you a 60″ x 60″ blanket, which is a very snuggle throw size. Crochet twelve 20″ squares and you’ll have a 60″ x 80″ blanket decent size twin blanket.

I’ve included even more sizes and details in the chart below. The chart under Finished Dimensions includes information on all the sizes and configuration for the Ava Blanket.

I really like how the grey turned out paired with the pink and cream. I wasn’t sure at first, since it’s a cool color in contrast to the warmer tones of the other two.

But it worked out. I think it helps to have the border in the same grey. It ties the whole blanket together.

The half double crochet pairs resulted in a much prettier fabric than I would have guessed. I almost went with no border, since the edges of this square are really straight and sturdy. But they’re also seamed squares, so I thought a border would be best.

Yarn

The yarn I used is Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy. This yarn is a soft and chunky #5 bulky weight yarn. The colors pictured are Millenial-the pink, Shade-the grey and Alabaster-the cream.

This bulky weight yarn works up quickly. Which is great when you’re crocheting a blanket. Each square crocheted up in about an hour.

Can I substitute yarns?

Yes, of course. Substituting out another #5 bulky weight yarn is simple. Lion Brand’s new Hue + Me is a #5 weight yarn that has a range of gorgeous colors.

Stitch

The half double crochet stitch pairs great with the chunky yarn in this blanket. Since the squares are crocheted in rows, we still get all that hdc texture that we love. These simple stitches and an easy repeat can yields a beautiful blanket.

The Ava Blanket is crocheted with hdc pairs. So we’ll crochet two half double crochets in one stitch. Then we’ll skip one stitch and crochet two hdc in the next stitch.

Each row will start with a chain two, that does not count as a stitch. Then each row will end with a hdc right next to the last pair of half double stitches (you won’t skip a stitch between these).

  12. Keep repeating this row until you have 30 rows or square measures 20" Cut yarn, leave a long tail for seaming.
  13. Make 6, 2 in each color. Decide on your layout.
  14. Match up squares for seaming. You will sew on the wrong side, so be sure the right sides of your squares are lining up before you sew. picture of blanket seaming squaresAn easy way to match them up is to make sure the half double crochet ridges line up, before laying them on top of one another.

I love how The Unraveled Mitten uses the half double crochet in the back loop and front loop. This is one of my favorite simple texture techniques. What your favorite ways to crochet the hdc?
