How To Crochet The Waffle Stitch Pattern & Tutorial
The waffle stitch is one of those classic crochet patterns that is so eye catching. It’s the epitome of coziness that we all think of when it comes to crochet.
Learn how to crochet the waffle stitch in this step-by-step tutorial. The written pattern also includes a video tutorial.
The waffle stitch pattern makes a cozy squishy blanket. But if this is a new stitch for you then a small home decor item like a crochet washcloth, trivet or dishcloth may be even better!
The combination of double crochet stitches, front and back post stitches create the wonderful waffle texture. I’m feeling hungry just looking at it!

Never miss a pattern!
Working around the post of the stitch is a more advanced technique so this is an intermediate level pattern. But, like I said, I’ve included a video tutorial so beginner crocheters can also learn this stitch with a bit of work!
To make this waffle crochet stitch pattern you’ll start with a foundation row of double crochets. Once you get the first row down it’s a simple 2 row repeat. When your project is long enough, you’ll want to stop after a row 2 repeat before you do the last row.
Even the wrong side of this stitch pattern looks great!
The waffle stitch can be a bit of yarn eater thanks to those post stitches. The small swatch here used 21 yards. But it sure does make for amazing texture!
Materials
- Any yarn and hook work with this pattern. I’m using a #4 medium worsted weight yarn Lion Brand Wool Ease* (80% acrylic, 20% wool, 197 yd / 190 m, 3 oz / 85 g) in shade fisherman.
- 5 mm hook (US size H-8),* or hook size needed to meet gauge.
- yarn needle, measuring tape, scissors
Notes
- Stitch multiple is 4 plus 5.
- Ch 3 counts as the first dc. I prefer to use a ch 3 alternative, here is my favorite one.

Size/Adjustments
This sample swatch is 4.5″ wide by 4″ tall.
If you want to make different sizes you’ll need to start with a foundation chain that’s a stitch multiple of 4+5, plus 2. If you’re not sure how to do this, you can add (or subtract) to my starting chain of 19 in 4s, so ch 23, 27, 31, etc.
