I chose to use a simple stitch, the half double crochet for this sweater because I want even a beginner crocheter to be able to customize it to fit in a way that is equally simple.

Since we’re using basic stitches you can add stitches or decrease at the bust, waist, hips, arms or wrists to truly create a sweater that’s a perfect fit!

This crochet sweater pattern is very beginner friendly. The top down style makes it a simple construction. The trickiest part is the cowl neck and to help you there I have included photos and a linked video tutorial.

Plus there’s always the option of crocheting it separately (it’s just a rectangle!) and sewing it on the neckline, or leaving it off if you prefer.

I like how the side slits give the sweater a little more ease at the hips. If you would like even more ease at the hip, simply start increasing by adding stitches. The pattern will tell you where to do this if you choose.

Creating the side slits is done by working the bottom of the front panel and back panels in rows, instead of in the round. You can adjust the slits by working more or less rows here.

I love the stitch definition of the half double crochet.

The stripes on the body are 9 rounds long here. I chose to reverse the stripes on the sleeves. Striping is always customizable to your liking!

The Yarn

Thanks to WeCrochet for providing the yarn for this sweater. Wool of the Andes* is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn.

I’m so happy with the structure and warmth this yarn add to this sweater pattern. If you would like to substitute another yarn, you can do that. Read more about choosing yarn for sweaters in this article.

Remember to check gauge for best results. You can read more about what gauge is and how to check it here.

Materials

  • 1100 yd/1006m-3245 yd/2967m Wool of the Andes* (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 1.76 oz/50g, 110 yd/100 m); a #4 medium weight yarn; see below for yardage by size.
  • 12 (12, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 27, 34) total skeins divided as 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) skeins mink heather (main color), 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) skeins persimmon heather (color a), 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) skeins pampas heather (color b), and 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) skeins brass heather (color c).
  • 4mm US size G/6 + 5mm US size H/8 hook,* or crochet hooks needed to meet gauge. See #2 in notes.
  • yarn needle, measuring tape, scissors, 6 stitch markers (optional)

Notes

  1. Please read through all notes and pattern before you begin.
  2. Please read through entire pattern and create a gauge swatch with larger hook before beginning.
  3. Pattern is for multiple sizes, where the first number given is the smallest size and the larger sizes follow in parenthesis. For example, “Ch 83 (89, 99, 105, 117, 129, 135, 144, 168)” means size x-small would chain 83 and size 4X chain 144. Where there is no size the instructions apply to all.
  4. Stitch counts are at the end of row instructions and are all inside the ( ).
  5. Ch 1 at beginning of the row does not count, start your first stitch in the same stitch.
  6. Since this sweater works from the top down, I recommend choosing the size that most closely aligns with your bust measurements, and then making adjustments from there. See Fit/Adjustments.

Construction

This pattern works from the top down in the round, with side by side increases at four points. When your sweater is wide enough, you will divide the body from the sleeves.

The rounds are joined and turned just like working rows. The seam is at one of the increase points so it will run down the side of the sweater where it will not disturb our stitch pattern.

It is very helpful to keep marking your first and last stitches throughout to easily keep track, especially if this is your first time making a sweater this way.

Gauge

4”/10cm x 4”/10cm = 13 hdc x 10 rows of hdc, after blocking

Be sure to check gauge as all a wool yarn vs an acrylic yarn will behave differently.

Fit/Adjustments

This sweater pattern works from the top down, which means it’s really easy to customize for your body. To begin with you will increase the yoke until your sweater is large enough to fit around the bust and your arms. It’s important that you check the fit here, before dividing. If you need to add/subtract more stitches and/or rows do so here.

Then you will divide into three sections: body, and two sleeves. Separate these sections and then try it on. You can adjust it here as needed.

How/Where to adjust:

  1. If your bust is smaller than your hips: choose the size compatible to your bust and add stitches on the sides from the waist down to a comfortable hip size.
  2. If your bust is larger than your hips: choose the size compatible to your bust and decrease stitches on the sides from the waist down to a comfortable hip size.
  3. The armhole depth can be adjusted (before dividing) by adding/subtracting rounds. If your sleeves and body are large enough do not add more increases, just regular rows around until the armhole depth is comfortable, then divide.
  4. The sleeve width can be adjusted (after dividing) by adding/subtracting sleeve stitches. Usually a sleeve will need to decrease. I recommend decreasing gradually with simple hd2tog at the join/seam of the sleeve. To do this alternate decrease rounds with regular rounds. Try it on as you go. Mark any decreases with a stitch marker so you can match your second sleeve. If you need a wider sleeve, do the same, but increase by adding 2 hdc in the same stitch.
  5. The body circumference (bust) can be adjusted (before dividing) by continuing to increase at the raglan points. If you need more, it is easiest to go up a size in the pattern (so keep following the next size up increases).
  6. The body circumference can also be adjusted after dividing. You may want to add some waist shaping, after the bust circumference is met. To do this you will decrease with hdc2tog on the sides of the body. I recommend a gradual decrease but alternating decrease rounds with regular rounds. Try it on as you go.
  7. The sweater length and sleeve length are simply a matter of adding more of the repeat row.

    5X go to Divide. (360 sts = 104 body, 76 sleeves, 104 body, 76 sleeves)

    Divide
To divide you will skip the sleeve stitches and just continue around on the body stitches. You can see how to divide the body and sleeves in this short video. Please note this is a different sweater pattern, but the same process.
Some sizes will start with body sts and some will start with skipping sleeve sts.
Once you have completed the divide row below, try it on to check for fit. Here is where you can simply add more rounds with or without increase stitches to fit your bust and arms.

Row 1a. Ch 1, hdc 54 (58, 66, 86, 94), sk 42 (46, 48, 62, 66) sts (these will be a sleeve), hdc 54 (58, 66, 86, 94), (the first hdc of this set will “join” the front and back of the sweater together-see second picture above), sk last 42 (46, 48, 62, 66) sts (the other sleeve) and join with a sl st to first st and turn. (108, 116, 132, 172, 188 sts)

    (L, XL, 4X, 5X)
Row 1b. Sk (52, 56, 72, 76) sts (these will be a sleeve), hdc (72, 80, 100, 104) (the first hdc of this set will “join” the front and back of the sweater together-see second picture above), sk (52, 56, 72, 76) sts (the other sleeve), hdc (72, 80, 100, 104) and join with a sl st to first st and turn. (144, 160, 200, 208 sts)

    Body
    Row count starts over.
    Striping is as follows:
    Rnds 1-14. In Main Color.
    Rnds 15-23. In Color A. (9 Rnds)
Rnds 24-32. In Color B. (9 Rnds before Side Split)

Rnd 1. Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st around, join with a sl st to first st and turn. 108 (116, 132, 144, 160, 172, 188, 200, 208 sts)

Rows 2-32. Rep Row 1, or to desired length. If you would like to do any waist shaping, use hdc2tog to decrease stitches on the sides. If you would like to do any hip increases, use 2 hdc in the same stitch on the sides. I usually recommend gradual changes, by alternating with regular rounds in between. Try it on for fit.

Side view of crochet sweater with side split on hem.

    Side Split
    Front
    In Color C
Work only front half of stitches. Be sure your raglan join seam is on the back of the sweater.

    Row 1. Ch 1, starting in same st, work 54 (58, 66, 72, 80, 86, 94, 100, 104) hdc, turn. (54, 58, 66, 72, 80, 86, 94, 100, 104 sts)

    Rows 2-13 (13, 15, 15, 15, 17, 17, 17, 17). Rep Row 1, or to desired length. = 5.25”/13.5cm (5.25”/13.5cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 6.75”/17cm, 6.75”/17cm, 6.75”/17cm, 6.75”/17cm)
For a longer side split, work more rows to your desired length. Cut yarn.

    Back
    In Color C
Join yarn to first st on back of sweater (be sure to work in the correct direction)-you should be looking at the wrong side of the hdc (it has the horizontal line) row you’re working into. The back is slightly longer than the front here.

    Row 1. Ch 1, starting in same st, work 54 (58, 66, 72, 80, 86, 94, 100, 104) hdc, turn. (54, 58, 66, 72, 80, 86, 94, 100, 104 sts)

    Rows 2-15 (15, 17, 17, 17, 19, 19, 21, 21). Rep Row 1. or to desired length. = 6”/15cm (6”/15cm, 6.75”/17cm, 6.75”/17cm, 6.75”/17cm, 7.5”/19cm, 7.5”/19cm, 8.5”/21.5cm, 8.5”/21.5cm) For a longer side split, work more rows to your desired length.

Continue from where you are, sc evenly around both side split and last rows, join with a sl st and cut yarn.

    Sleeves
All sizes are written for the same length of 18”/45.5cm from the join. Please adjust your sleeve length to your desire. Remember sleeves tend to lengthen over time. Some sizes will need to decrease sleeve width, see notes below for more details. Sleeve width at join: 13"/33cm (XS), 14"/35.5cm (S), 14.75"/37.5cm (M), 16"/40.5cm (L), 17.25"/44cm (XL), 19"/48.5cm (2X), 20.25"/51.5cm (3X), 22"/56cm (4X), 23.25"/59cm (5X)

Sleeve striping is as follows: in Color C for 9 rnds, Color B for 9 rnds and Color A for 9 rnds, finishing in Main Color.

Join yarn with sl st at the underarm. Again make sure you’re working in the correct direction-you should be looking at the wrong side of the hdc row you’re working into.

Row 1. Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st around, join with a sl st to first st and turn. 42 (46, 48, 52, 56, 62, 66, 72, 76 sts) There will be a small hole at the underarm row 1 join. Just use your yarn tail to sew it closed.

Rows 2-45. Rep row 1, or until desired sleeve length is reached.
If you would like to adjust your sleeve width here do so now. If you need more width for the sleeves, increase with 2 hdc in the same st at the join seam. Try it on for fit. To decrease use a hdc2tog close to the join seam. To gradually taper your sleeve decrease 1 stitch on each round.

Decreasing Round: Ch 1, hdc in first st, hdc2tog, hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to first st and turn.
Rep this row until sleeve width (when laid flat) is 6.5-8.5” wide, or to desired width. Once your sleeve is decreased to your width, continue with Row 1 reps if you still need more sleeve length.

Last row. Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around, join with a sl st to first st. Cut yarn.
    Rep on other sleeve.

    Cowl Neck

This cowl neck is worked in hdc ribbing, if your yarn is very soft you may consider using a sc ribbing or go down a hook size to give it a little more structure.

    In Main Color
With sweater right side out, join yarn on neckline where you want the split open in your cowl neck. I joined at the front left (when wearing) raglan seam.
Row 1 will be the height of your cowl neck. You will crochet stitches away from the neckline and then work back into them and join these two rows to the neckline, turn and repeat.

*If you find this technique too fussy, then you can crochet a rectangle separately, and sew it around the neck. Without joining on the neckline, just follow Row 1 and hdc in the 3rd loop for each row until your rectangle is 86 (86, 86, 97, 97, 105, 108, 116, 116) rows long = 21.5”/55cm (21.5”/55cm, 21.5”/55cm, 24.25”/62cm, 24.25”/62cm, 26.25”/67cm, 27”/69cm, 29”/74cm, 29”/74cm).Direction of work for adding cowl.

    Row 1. Fhdc 20 (20, 20, 24, 24, 24, 28, 28, 28) = 5”/13cm (5”/13cm, 5”/13cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 7”/18cm, 7”/18cm, 7”/18cm) and go to Row 2.
OR Ch 21 (21, 21, 25, 25, 25, 29, 29, 29) hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, join the ribbing with a sc2tog to the two neckline rows where you are, turn. See how to do this in my joining ribbing tutorial. Go to Row 3.

Row 2. Ch 1, hdc in 3rd loop of each st back across the row, join the ribbing to the neck with a sc2tog in the two neckline sts where you are (start right below your row and finish in the next st), turn. See how to do this in my joining ribbing tutorial.

Row 3. Ch 1, hdc in 3rd loop of each st back across the row, turn.

    Keep repeating Rows 2-3 around the neckline. When you get all the way around, continue repeating Row 3 without joining the rows to the sweater for 14 (14, 14, 17, 17, 17, 20, 20, 20) more rows = 5”/13cm (5”/13cm, 5”/13cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 6”/15cm, 7”/18cm, 7”/18cm, 7”/18cm),.

After the last row, bring the flap under the first part of the cowl. Then use a sl st to secure the last row underneath the first part of the cowl so they overlap, and will “split” open when worn. Where to attach cowl neck.

Try it on here to be sure the cowl neck sits flat for you. You may need additional rows to help is spread out. The cowl really needs to overlap quite a bit to sit right. Cut yarn weave in all ends. Finished sweater in autumn stripes.

  1. I love this pattern; it’s so easy to follow! But it’s taking on a poncho shape; the increases are really pointy. I’m using the correct hook size and the stitch count is right; what am I doing wrong?

  2. Hi Jes, thanks for reaching out! I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. The yoke works up like this to start. Your increases may be a bit pointier but it makes sense with increases. I think in the end the stitches will smooth out once you join them to divide the body and sleeves. I’d keep going and see how it’s shaping up after you separate the body and sleeves. I hope this helps!
    Thanks,
