How to Crochet a Loofah a Tutorial

Sharing is caring!

Learn how to crochet a loofah from cotton yarn. These crochet poofs are useful and make great gifts.

I love the simplicity of a crochet loofah. If you’ve ever made a crochet curlicue or bookworm then the loofah is the same idea.

To give it the customary ball shape we’ll join in the round. So we’ll crochet in a circle to make this loofah.

The Yarn

For this loofah tutorial I’m using a cotton yarn from Joann. It’s Big Twist Cotton, in beige.

This is a #4 medium worsted weight cotton yarn. You can use any comparable cotton yarn, like Peaches N Cream or Lily.

Premier yarn has several cottons that will work well. I use their Rodeo cotton in the Lana Knit Cardigan and the Juliet Coaster crochet pattern.

The Stitch

The loofah is made of purely double crochets. We use chains for the loop. So this is a beginner friendly crochet project.

You’ll need to be able to work in the round. We do this by joining our last stitch to the first with a slip stitch, and continuing on.

Materials

  • Big Twist Cotton a #4 medium worsted weight yarn, (85% Cotton/15% Polyester, 1.94 oz/55g, 131 yds/120m) color: beige;
  • 5 mm/US size H-8 hook
  • Yarn needle, Measuring tape, Scissors

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.

Construction

This pattern is worked in the round.

Level

Easy

Gauge

Gauge is not terribly important for this pattern. With the listed yarn + hook I get 4 dc in 1”/5cm. I would recommend using a hook size that is comfortable for you with your yarn.

Fit/Adjustments

Ideally, you want to fit as many double crochets into the first round as you can, the more the rufflier.

You can add another round of the repeat for a larger loofah also.
