Retta Lightweight Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

The Retta is long and lacy. This easy crochet pattern can be fashioned into a summer scarf or cowl. Just one skein of yarn creates this lovely crochet cowl pattern. Step by step photo tutorial is included for any level crocheter.

The beginner friendly crochet mesh used in the Retta Cowl is a simple one row repeat that uses basic crochet stitches. Which makes this crochet infinity cowl pattern a relaxing project, while also watching tv or even listening to a book.

I love how effortlessly this infinity cowl pairs with a simple dress. The multiple loop layers add interest to an otherwise basic outfit.

Infinity scarves are some of my favorite gifts to make, especially in cotton yarn. The stitch definition is gorgeous in Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton. The simple double crochet stitches paired with the sheen of this yarn is a beautiful combination. You can use acrylic yarn if you prefer.

The Inspiration

One of my favorite crochet patterns is the Skinny Summer Scarf. It’s an easy repeat, so you can Netflix and crochet. I made this one in teal, which is also a fav. And there is just something to love about crochet lace-especially when it’s simple.

The only thing is, in an effort to create a one skein easy crochet scarf, I worked the Skinny Summer Scarf on the long edge. That way I could be certain that I’d get to the right length, while only using one skein. Well I don’t know many crocheters who like working into 200+ chains. It’s tedious.

With the popularity of the Skinny Summer Scarf pattern, I knew I wanted to re-work it on the short end. And with the remake I chose to crochet an infinity cowl this time. Bonus, I’ve included a photo tutorial too.

The great thing about working this lace mesh on the short end is that you have control over how long and how much yarn. I’ve crocheted the Retta Infinity Cowl for the full length of the yarn. And all 186 yards yielded a whopping 114 inches.

With that much length you can feel confident that your skein will make it. Even if you’re using less than 186 yards, there should be plenty of yarn there to create a lengthy infinity cowl or scarf.

Personally I love the look of a skinny scarf, especially for spring and summer. But I do find a cowl easier to deal with for everyday wear. So I’ve written in both options for you here.

Fit/Adjustment

Finished Dimensions: 4″ x 57″ after seaming

As written, this long cowl can be worn looped four times. You can work half as many rows and still get have a good length cowl that can be looped twice.

To adjust the length crochet more or less of the repeat rows.

To adjust the width of your scarf the stitch multiple is 3 + 5, (3, 6, 9… 15, 18, etc) plus 5 for the foundation chain. So you might start with a chain of 29 (29-5=24, which is divisible by 3) for a wider cowl. Or a chain of 17 (17-5=12, which is divisible by 3) for a narrower cowl.

To create a cowl, once you’ve reached your desired length, sew the short ends together.

To create a scarf, don’t seam the ends, just work the repeat until your length is reached. At least 60” long is a good scarf length.
