Crochet Slouchy Hat Pattern | Autumn Crunch Hat

Sharing is caring!

The Autumn Crunch Crochet Hat pattern is a slightly slouchy and highly textured bottom up hat. It’s easy, modern and on trend. Whip up one for yourself or your loved ones.

This free bottom up hat pattern comes in sizes newborn to adult large. Customize this textured hat in any color or combination that you can imagine.

I used Vanna’s Choice yarn, a #4 med weight yarn for the hat pictured. I used less than one ball for the small adult/tween size.

This gorgeous fall color is Rust and it is just spot on! I can just never get enough of the autumn color ways.

I love these faux fur poms from Bee Humble Crochet they just make the hat. The Autumn Crunch Hat looks great without a pom too, if you prefer.

The hat is actually reversible too. The inside looks the same as the outside, make of that what you will. I guess if you didn’t use the pom and it got dirty then you could just flip it.

Or if you’re my kids then you just put your hat (and everything else) on which ever way you pick it up. So at least this hat looks great from both sides.

Sometimes I really do prefer the pom-less look. That’s one reason I love these snap on (and off) poms!

It looks great both ways. Plus, you’ll need to remove the pom for washing.

Mmm, deep purple on this rusty orange are a favorite color pairing here. What are your go to fall combinations?

  1. Hi! I started this pattern and all has been smooth sailing so far. I even learned how to foundation double crochet through your video! But I got a little confused once I got to the hat portion and it said to “turn” after row 1. I slip stitched to make it a circle after completing the brim, so I don’t really understand how to “turn” when working in the round. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  2. Hi Alli,

Thanks for your kind words. The join and turn technique is both easy and tricky, in my opinion. After you join and sl st, normally you just continue working in the same direction. To turn, you just flip your work, exactly like you do for working it flat. So you’re working on both sides of the fabric. I show this technique in another hat video: The Positano Hat. Here is the video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odf-u2e43nk&feature=youtu.be if you skip ahead to about 5:12 mins in then I’m joining and turning. I’m using a different stitch, but the concept is the same.

    I hope this helps!

  3. Will this look the same if instead of turning I just make sure I’m doing the hdc on the slip stitch and vice versa?

  4. Hi Jennifer,
Yes, I do think that will work! And it sounds like an easy way to avoid the join and turn. I think you could also do it without joining-just sl st into the first hdc and keep going. You’ll have to keep track of your first stitch. I hope it works out!

  5. Hi! I am having trouble and don’t understand why. I don’t understand why hat stitches have more than brim? My 1st row for body has same stitch count as brim even though I should have more stitch count…(?)
Also my body doesn’t show straight but angled lines.

How can I make extra stitch count for body from brim stitch counts?

I love this pattern and want to complete this beautiful hat as your picture shows! Thanks!

  6. Hi Landa,
I’m sorry you’re having trouble, but thanks for reaching out with your question. It’s actually a really good question! The brim on a hat is stretchy so it will stretch to fit. The body usually needs more stitches to accommodate the head size since these stitches may not be as stretchy.
So here are a few tips (I’m not sure what size you’re making) but most sizes in this pattern have 4-6 more stitches in the body of the hat than the brim. If you place 1 stitch per ribbing row you’ll end up those 4-6 stitches less, so you want to add 2 stitches in 4-6 places. (or however many your size calls for) You can spread them out. Maybe start with 2 stitches in the first ribbing row, then crochet 10 stitches with just 1 stitch and then add 2 stitches in the next, etc. When I need a specific number of stitches I will check my count at my halfway point and make sure I’m close to half. And then when I get about 1-2″ close to the end I will check again to be sure the stitches will fit in my remaining space.
I’m not sure on straight versus angled lines. I think this stitch does have a slightly angled horizontal line, if that’s what you mean. Maybe mine look straighter since it’s on the head?
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

  7. @Christa, thank you so much for answering and giving great help! I’m gonna start over and try what you suggested. I’m self taught crocheter and always amazed by talented people like you sharing cool items using new skills etc. I can’t wait to finish this hat!

  8. @Landa,
You’re quite welcome! I hope it goes smoothly. I did have one other thought. When working the body of the hat the pattern we’re working in the round but you join them and then turn working back the other way. I wonder if you forget to turn the lines will look different. If it’s easier, you can also join the round and instead of turning just start with the opposite stitch (see Jennifer’s comment above). I didn’t think of it at the time, but that may be easier!
    Hope this helps!
