Sharing is caring!

The Charisma Cowl is the coziest cowl! This chunky lacy design works up best in Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn.

The super bulky weight yarns are perfect for crocheting up quick gifts like this chunky cowl crochet pattern. Plus the wool blend makes this cowl nice and warm.

These easy chunky crochet cowls are the types of crochet project I could make all day, every day. Quick and simple with pretty stitches that work well in a chunky yarn, what’s not to love?

And if I haven’t said it before my neck is always cold! I prefer cowls to scarves for the simplicity. Four littles hanging off of me make scarves trickier. Plus cowls, use less yarn.

One day Spring is in the air and the next there’s snow on the mountain. But mornings are sure to be cold for a while.

The Yarn

This chunky crochet cowl pattern uses only one ball of Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick & Quick. You can substitute this yarn for less than 100 yds of another #6 super bulky yarn.

The stitch for this simple crochet cowl pattern!

For this cowl I use a simple two row repeat. One row uses the cluster stitch, which is a dc3tog and a ch 2. The other row uses a v-stitch, dc, ch 1, dc in the same stitch.

Since we’re just alternating these two rows, I add a little hint at the end of the rows either (v-stitch) or (cluster) to help you remember which stitch goes in that row.

Finishing Options

I include three options for finishing your cowl. You can simply match the ends up and sew it together, that’s one option.

Or you can twist it first, like the blue cowl in the picture below. Then you seam it up the same, which secures the twist.

Finally, you could add 3 large buttons, like I do in the Arcone Cowl and not seam it at all, but button it together.

Materials

  • 92 yds / 84 m #6 bulky yarn, I use Lion Brand’s Wool Ease Thick & Quick* (80% acrylic / 20% wool, 106 yd / 97 m, 6 oz, 170 yd), color: fisherman or mystical.
  • 9mm US Size (M) crochet hook, I love my Furls Hooks* they’re so comfortable, especially when working with super bulky yarn.
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Notes

  1. Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.
  2. The stitch multiple is 5 plus 6. You can add or subtract 5 to my starting chain.

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

V-stitch – double crochet, chain 1, double crochet in same stitch

Cluster Stitch: dc3tog, ch 2

Gauge

2 dc x 1 row = 1” / 2.5 cm

Finished Dimensions

Finished measurements are 8” / 20.5 cm x 26” / 66 cm when laid flat.

Adjustments

If you would like to make a taller or shorter cowl, simply make more or less repetitions of the two row repeat.

To adjust how long the cowl is, use a stitch multiple of 5, plus 6 for the starting chain. Adding or subtracting by 5 to my starting chain of 51 is an easy way to do it.
