The Flurry Pop Beanie a Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

The Flurry Pop Beanie is a one ball wonder using only one skein of Lion Brand’s Hometown USA superbulky yarn for the Teen/Adult size beanie, and even less for all the littles.

I love the option of adding those puff stitches as color pops too. It’s a great way to really make the puffs pop. This beanie works up fast, color changes or not.

It looks amazing when you add your favorite pom to the top of the hat! I added a faux fur pom pom in purple. But you can make your own, my kids love using the Clover pom pom maker.

I originally designed this beanie in the teen/adult size and was pleasantly surprised to see that my one little ball of superbulky was a perfect match!

A super bulky crochet hat pattern like this makes an excellent last minute gift for when the cold weather comes.

When I added the smaller sizes, I also added more rows of the puff stitch (or yarn knots as my husband coined them), which looks really fun on the kiddos.

To get the sizing just right in this superbulky yarn I opted to add more stitches than typical on some vs. changing hook sizes. So as long as you can match gauge with a 9mm hook you’re all set.

Be sure to check more than just your letter size so you have the right hook. Both M & N are often labeled as 9mm. And of course, if you have trouble meeting my gauge then try a smaller or larger hook size. Read more about meeting crochet gauge in this post.

Materials

  • 35-81 yds #6 super bulky yarn, in 1-2 colors. I used 1 ball Lion Brand Hometown yarn* in LA Tan for the adult size pictured above.
  • 9 mm hook (US Size M)* or hook size needed to meet gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Pom Pom* optional; the luscious purple pom is from Brittany @bee_humble_crochet

For the baby size pictured below I used Fayetteville Frost* for the main color and LA Tan for the puff stitches.

Notes

Hat is worked in the round, top down.

Ch 3 counts as a stitch, I highly recommend using a ch 3 alternative, here’s my favorite.

To close the puff stitch you will ch 1-this ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

To change colors for every puff st-finish the st before the puff st in your second color, make the puff st, switch back to your main color for the ch 1. See my Invisible Color Change Video here.

The stitch multiple is 3.

If you want to sew on a pom pom leave a long tail to start.
