Playtime Toddler Poncho Easy + Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

The Playtime Poncho is quick and easy to make and even quicker and easier to wear! If you’re the parent of a toddler you’ll know that getting them to wear that extra layer of warmth in the cooler months is most important.

This poncho crochet pattern features Red Heart Yarn Collage-a #7 jumbo yarn that works up fast in these double crochet stitches. With these colorful yarns I find that usually the basic stitches look better than a stitch pattern.

If you don’t have any #7 jumbo yarn, you can substitute two strands of another yarn weight. I recommend trying it with two strands of #5 bulky weight yarn. It may also work with #6 super bulky yarn. Make a gauge swatch and see how close you are first!

I picked this chunky yarn up from Joann and was delighted with the colorway for my little lady. She loves her pink, purple and blues and “Forget Me Not” is perfect.

She also likes to wear skirts and dresses that she can “spin around” in, so I wanted this easy crochet pattern to have a little flair. I added a row of single crochet and chains to increase on the last round that gives the poncho just enough flounce to make it fun show her unique style.

Since this is made with jumbo yarn it makes a pretty dense fabric. So I kept the length short. I didn’t want anything too heavy on my little one, but I did want the extra warmth.

I also wanted to keep her hands free, so keeping the length short made sense. If you want a longer poncho you just need more yarn and more rounds!

This is a great project that works up quickly if you’re not sure what to make with that jumbo yarn.

Fit/Adjustments

If you would like to try adjusting this pattern to fit larger sizes you may need to start with more stitches for the foundation chain. You’ll need enough to fit over the head. Then you would continue in pattern but increasing for even more rounds to fit the body.

Making the poncho longer is a simple matter of adding more rows. You could also transform this poncho into a cushiony cowl by making it shorter and not increasing.
