Cocoon Shrug Free Crochet Pattern in Kids Sizes

Sharing is caring!

This Bobble Cocoon Shrug is such a great pattern make for the kids! I love a bobble stitch, who doesn’t? The free crochet pattern is available in children’s sizes 2T-16 for all your kiddos!

This little shrug makes a great layering piece that’s easy to throw on for chilly days. I love how the collar adds extra warmth right where you need it-around your neck.

The bobbles add a nice detail that compliments the openwork of the filet pattern. The contrasting colors offer just the right amount of interest if you love color. I know this crochet cocoon cardigan pattern would look stunning in a nice solid too.

Cocoon shrugs are the easiest patterns to make crochet clothes with. They’re made from simple rectangles. This pattern is worked flat in rows.

To create the sleeves for this crochet cocoon shrug pattern you fold the ends and sew it together (more pictures and details in the pattern). The collar edging and sleeve edging are then added on in rounds.

This technique creates an easy to make and an easy to wear sweater. I love how adjustable the edgings are when you add them after seaming. This allows for a more custom fit or look to suit your needs!

The hardest part is choosing which color combination to crochet your Bobble Cocoon Shrug in! This Caron Simply Soft Yarn has such nice drape here.

She’s sporting her turkey shirt too. I also made that last year and she wouldn’t wear it. It’s now her favorite shirt and she’s just about out grown it. I guess that’s some consolation, right?

You can find the Turkey Shirt Applique & Tutorial here.

And all buttoned up for ease of wear. As fussy as buttons can be, it’s nice to have the option so things stay on with active kids!

Yardage by Size

The smaller size fits 12 mos -2 yrs, get it here: toddler size shrug pattern.

Sizes 2-6: 2 skeins (630 yds)
Sizes 8-10: 3 skeins (945 yds)
Sizes 12-16: 4 skeins (1260 yds)

Gauge:

2″x 2″ = 7 dc x 4 rows of dc
3” x 3” = (7 dc & 6 ch sp) x 6 rows in filet pattern

To learn more about how to gauge swatch read this article.

Notes:

  1. Ch 3 counts as a dc, ch 4 counts as dc + ch 1
  2. The main body piece is worked in rows to form a rectangle.
  3. After sewing sleeves together the edging is worked in the round.
  4. The pattern is filet crochet with some bobble stitches to form an offset pattern.
  5. On the bobble rows, there will be 3 dc + sk next dc + ch 1 in between bobbles.
  6. You will repeat a bobble row every three rows, once the pattern repeats.
  7. The different sizes are written separately.

Stitches:

bobble – yarn over (yo) insert hook into stitch to be worked, yo again and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on your hook), yo insert hook into the same stitch, yo again and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on your hook), yo insert hook into same stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (4 loops on your hook), yo and insert hook in the same stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops (5 loops on you hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops, ch 1 to close the bobble.

If applicable, written as size 2 (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) otherwise instructions apply to all.

Sew armholes:

With right side facing you, lay out rectangle with short ends to the left and right and the longest sides are at top (your last row) and bottom (your first row).

Bring corners together by folding top right corner down into the center, then folding bottom right corner up into the center, matching them together.

Using a yarn/tapestry needle and a length of matching yarn, sew the two edges together leaving an opening of 3.5” (4, 4.5, 5, 5, 5.5, 5.5 & 6”) to form the armhole openings. Repeat on other side. Finish off. Turn right side out.

sleeve crochet edging

Sleeve Edging:

The sleeve edging is worked in rounds. The hdc v-stitch is used here (hdc, ch1 hdc). In Round 3 you will begin stacking the hdc v-stitches.

Attach Color B yarn to sleeve opening with sl st.

1. Ch 1, sc a multiple of 3 (i.e. 12, 15, 33, 36, 42, etc.) around sleeve opening, sl st to top of 1st sc to join. You may have to place 2 sc in one stitch to achieve this.
2. Ch 3 (counts as hdc + ch 1), hdc in same, sk 2, *{(hdc, ch 1, hdc) all in next st, sk next 2 sts} repeat from * around, sl st to top of 2nd ch to join round.
3. Ch 3, hdc in next ch sp, sk next 2 hdc, *{(hdc, ch 1, hdc in next ch sp, sk next 2 hdc} rep from * around, sl st to top of 2nd ch to join round. Continue to rep Round 3 if you would prefer more sleeve edging.
4. Ch 1, sc in same and around, sl st to first to join.

Finish off.

Body Edging:

The edging is worked in rounds. The hdc v-stitch is used here (hdc, ch1 hdc). **The stitch pattern is similar to the sleeve edging, but you’re only skipping one stitch here, not 2 as on the sleeves.

Attach Color B in any stitch.

1. Ch 3 (counts as hdc + ch 1), hdc in same, sk next st, *{(hdc, ch 1, hdc) all in next st, sk next st} rep from * around, sl st to 2nd ch to join round.
2. Ch 3, hdc in next ch sp, sk next 2 hdc, *{(hdc, ch 1, hdc in next ch sp, sk next 2 hdc} rep from * around, sl st to top of 2nd ch to join round
3-5. Repeat round 2. Continue more reps of Round 2 for more edging, if desired.
6. Ch 1, sc in same st and in each around, sl st to join.

Finish off.

Finished edging is 2″ wide.

  1. This looks like something my granddaughter would like. Have to work on one –after Christmas!

  2. Thank you. Right now, this one is only in the children/youth sizes here. You might try modifying the largest youth size, if you’re comfortable doing that.

  3. Hi Crystal! I really want to give this pattern a try, but I am nervous about forming the arm holes. Do you happen to have a video? Thank you so much!

  4. Hi Corinne,
Thanks for your interest in this pattern and your question! I totally understand. Unfortunately I do not have a video for this one. I did include some pictures for sewing the armholes in the pattern. For the cocoon style shrug you crochet a rectangle and then fold the top and bottom corner on the left edge to meet in the center. This forms one armhole (when you sew it, leaving the arm opening). Then you repeat on the right side. Sorry I don’t have a video right now though! I hope this helps.

  5. Hi Crystal! When you go to sew to arm holes, how do you attach the end of the yarn to the garment? I’m sorry if this is a silly question, but I am new to crocheting clothes. Thank you so much for this lovely pattern! I am excited to give it a try.

  6. Hi Leslie,
Not a silly question at all. If you’re using a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew your seam you’ll want to start with a “locking stitch.” You go into the first stitch and leave a tail of at least 6″ and then you go back into the same stitch again. This loops it around itself and “locks” it. You’ll need to weave in that end securely (back and forth and in a square) so it doesn’t come loose though. I have some seaming videos that might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTkL_jl907s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrbusnDuMwg or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tsoF45bm68
Another option is to slip stitch the yarn on with your hook and just slip stitch the seam together. You’ll want to use this technique on the wrong side so it doesn’t show as much, but it’s the easiest!
    I hope this helps,
    Crystal

  7. LOVE, LOVE LOVE this pattern. Wait until my Great Grandaughter gets this one. She will really love Mimi then. Thank you.

  8. Hi Crystal! Is 3.5″ the circumference of the armhole, or should I lay the armhole flat to measure, meaning it would actually be 7″? Thank you so much for your help! This pattern has been a little above my skill level but I think it’s going to turn out!

  9. Hi Lesie,
Yes you are right, it’s 3.5″ when you have already folded it and measure it flat. So 7″ around. I hope that makes sense! Good for having a go at this pattern, I hope you love it!

  10. That smile made my day. She is a darling. Thanks for sharing. By the way I plan on making 2 for the twins I crochet for.
