Free Crochet Sweater Pattern for Kids and Teen Sizes

Sharing is caring!

This cute sweater features a v-neck and it has a beautiful texture. The kids crochet sweater is made with basic stitches. Choose a soft yarn and this crochet top is perfect for active boys or a little girl.

The free crochet pattern includes children’s sizes 2 through youth size 16. The v-neck is shallow, so it’s not too deep. The fit is snug but stretchy. Fitted sweaters are less likely to catch on things on busy kids.

The free pattern includes options for creating short sleeves, or long sleeves. This sweater is an easy pattern and includes lots of pictures, plus links to video tutorials for the various parts of the sweater.

I can not believe how much my little guy absolutely adores this shirt. He wears it all the time. He sleeps in it. He climbs in it. He lounges in it. He loves it.

This short sleeve v-neck sweater is my son’s first choice when getting dressed. It’s fitted without being tight and so soft when made with Lion Brand Jeans yarn. It’s his favorite shirt to wear morning, noon and night!

The v-neck is a high neck intended for an active boy, but looks great on all sizes. The set in sleeves alleviate some of the bulk at the sleeves allowing for a roomy and comfortable fit. With 3 sleeve options, you’re set no matter the weather!

The Yarn

Now while I’d like to think my son is so stoked about his shirt just because it’s mama made, realistically I know some of it is the yarn. Lion Brand’s Jeans yarn is so super soft. It’s truly the softest acrylic yarn (yay, machine washable!).

The pink color one was also a Jeans Colors for a limited time called Bermuda. It pairs well with the grey Vintage color. While some of these yarn colors have been discontinued, you can still find some of the colors here.

Jeans yarn makes a great garment and you don’t even need any special stitches. My son even passed this sweater down to his little sister. It is still soft and held its color after years of use!

Kids sweaters don’t use as much yarn. They love having their own sweaters that mama makes. And they even wear them to school.

Stripes is also a great way to use up scrap yarn on a child’s sweater. Because realistically they are going to grow out of it. So use what you have if you can!

Notes

1. Stitch multiple is an even number plus one for the foundation chain.

2. Each alt sc row will start with a flo sc and end with a blo sc.

3. When sc2tog you will work under both loops like normal.

4. Starting ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

5. When adding the stripes, leave a long tail of Color B to seam easily in that color later.

6. This is a multi-size pattern, written in size order starting with the smaller sizes. The bolded numbers to start a line are the Row Number, shown below in [ ] for the different sizes. The numbers following a line, at the end are in parenthesis and are the stitch counts for that row, for example:

 Rows 18-35. [38, 41, 47, 51, 53, 53, 53] Ch 1, sc in flo of same st, sc in blo of next st, continue to alt sc across, turn. 45 (49, 55, 57, 61, 65, 69, 71) sts”

In the lines above all sizes are starting at Row 18. Size 2, the first set of numbers in bold, before the brackets, will work through Row 35 and end with 45 stitches. Size 10, 4th in the brackets, will work through Row 51 and end with 61 stitches.

Stitches

alt sc – alternating single crochet = sc in the front loop only of the first stitch and then sc into the back loop only of the next stitch. Continue to repeat alternating between the two. Always start with flo and ending with blo.

blo – back loop only = crochet into the back loop of the st only

ch-chain

flo – front loop only = crochet into the front loop of the st only

sc – single crochet

sc2tog – single crochet two together = insert hook into first st, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 3 loops.

sl st – slip stitch

Construction

This sweater pattern is made in pieces and then seamed together. First you will crochet the front and back panels.

Then you will sew them together at the sides and the shoulder seam. To make the sleeves you join at the armhole and crochet them in the round.

This is an easy pattern, but it does have shaping at the armholes and v-neck. I’ve included pictures and video tutorials to help you along the way.

  10. Back panel and front panel with v-neck side by side in pink and grey.

Seam Shoulders

  1. Green needle seaming shoulders of front and back panel of blue sweater.
  2. Sew stitch for stitch with green yarn needle.
  3. Before seaming shoulders, check your armhole height:
    Height from Rows 36-54= 4.5” [39-58= 4.75, 42-62= 5, 48-70= 5.5, 52-76= 6, 54-80= 6.5, 54-82= 7, 54-84= 7.5] inches tall. This is the armhole section where the sleeves will be attached and worked.
  4. Place the right sides of both your front and back panel together. Line up all the edges and match up stripes.
  5. Using the long tail you left, working on the wrong side, sew front panel to back panel at shoulder seams. A mattress stitch is a good one to use for seaming.

Seam Sides

  1. Front and back panel of sweater seamed at shoulders and sides.
  2. Using the long tail you left, thread your yarn needle. Sew side seams together from bottom hem to bottom of the armhole, stop at row: 36, leaving (4.5”) [39 (4.75”), 42 (5”), 48 (5.5”), 52 (6”), 54 (6.5”), 54 (7”), 54 (7.5”)] inches for the armhole. I did stop at the stripe and change to Color B to sew that section together and then continued with Color A for the rest. Rep on other side and finish off.

Sleeveless

  1. Pink sweater vest with v-neck and grey stripe.
  2. You’re done (almost)! Just attach your Color B yarn to the underside of the armhole, ch 1 and starting in the same stitch, sc around, sl st to the first sc and finish off.

Short Sleeves (& to start Long Sleeves)

  1. The sleeves are worked in the round, but you will turn after every round, as you would when working in rows to keep the stitch look the same as the body of the sweater.
At the armhole attach yarn with a sl st to the underside.
  2. Ch 1 and starting in the same st, sc 38 (40, 42, 46, 52, 56, 60, 64) evenly around the armhole, sl st to the first sc to join, TURN. 38 (40, 42, 46, 52, 56, 60, 64) sc
  3. Ch 1, alt sc in each st around, TURN. 38 (40, 42, 46, 52, 56, 60, 64) alt sc
  4. Ch 1, flo sc, sc2tog, blo sc, continue to alt sc around until the last 3 sts then sc2tog, blo sc in the last st, TURN. 36 (38, 40, 44, 50, 54, 58, 62) st
  5. Ch 1, alt sc in each st around, TURN. 36 (38, 40, 44, 50, 54, 58, 62) alt sc
  6. Ch 1, flo sc, sc2tog, blo sc, continue to alt sc around until the last 3 sts then sc2tog, blo sc in the last st, TURN. 34 (36, 38, 42, 48, 52, 56, 60) st
  7. Rounds 6-7. [11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 23] Ch 1, alt sc in each st around, TURN. Change to Color B at end of last round.

    Color B

  8. Rounds 8-11. [12-15, 14-17, 16-19, 18-21, 21-24, 23-26, 24-27] Ch 1, alt sc in each st around, TURN. Change to Color A at the end of last round.

    Color A

  9. Round 12. [16, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 28] Ch 1, alt sc in each st around, TURN. Finish off. Length of sleeves: 3” (4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6.25, 6.75, 7)” Rep on other side for second sleeve. To lengthen repeat rnd 12. Continue below for long sleeves.

Long Sleeve Option (continued from Short Sleeves)

  1. Continue on repeating Rounds 3 (dec) & 4 (reg) four more times (8 rounds), decreasing by 8 more stitches total, down to: 26 (28, 30, 34, 40, 44, 48, 52) sts. This will decrease your sleeve width by 2.”
  2. Then continue to add 42 [42, 42, 44, 48, 53, 53, 52] more regular alt sc rounds or until you’ve reached a length of: 13.5” (14.5, 15, 16, 17.5, 19.5, 20, 20)” Finish off. Total long sleeve rounds: 54 [58, 60, 64, 70, 78, 80, 80]
  3. Rep on other side for second sleeve.

    Neck

    Color B

Join Color B to any stitch in the back along the neck opening with a sl st.

    1. Ch 1, sc in the same st and evenly around the neck opening, sizes that have skipped center stitches of the v-neck (Sizes 2, 4, 8, 10, 12 & 14) will sc into those spaces now, sl st to join to first st.

    2. Ch 1, flo sc in next sc, blo sc in next, continue to alt sc around the neck, sl st to join. Finish off.

  1. What a lovely design, and thanks a lot for sharing it. I would like to make a Medium for me and a large size for my husband. But how do I go about making it? Is there a video tutorial on YouTube for this pattern? Thanks.

  2. Hi Trish,

Thank you. To make this shirt, you’ll need to know how to read a crochet pattern. However, there are video tutorials for many of the steps and techniques. These are listed under the “Video” heading. Also keep in mind that this pattern is written for children’s sizes, so customizing it for adults would take some additional math. Thanks for reaching out. I hope this helps.

  3. Thank you for this pattern. It is so hard to find patterns that include measurements for preteens. Can you please break down the amounts of yarn needed for doing the pattern as shown in the 2 different colors? Thank you.

  4. You’re welcome Terri. I divided out the yarn amounts for the two colors. It’s listed out under the Materials, titled “Estimated yards needed by size.” I hope this helps.
    Have a great weekend,
