Crochet Football Hat Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Crochet a football hat for your littles team member. This free crochet hat pattern is great for babies or big kids, or their adults!

This crochet football hat pattern is available in newborn baby to adult sizes. If you’re familiar with crochet beanies, this is just a basic hdc hat.

I add one little technique to the white stripes which really makes them stand out. I’ve detailed how to do it in the notes and pattern below, in case it’s a new technique for you.

I love a good reason to crochet little hats and my sister in law is expecting, so I did just that-crocheted up some itty bitty hats. Since she’s due in the fall, and her husband is a fan-the football hat is an obvious win!

I’ve included measurements for the crown circle under each pattern size, and the hat height at the end.

I’ve set what I’d consider a minimum circle for each size, so if yours is a little over, say .25-.5″ bigger that’s fine. But anything bigger and it’s probably going to be the next size up! You want your hat to fit, so if you’re circle is off be sure to adjust your hook size.

I’ve also included how to sew on the laces if sewing onto your crochet projects is new for you. Each hat size has it’s own section, for easy reading. The Laces section is located at the very end, including the video tutorial. I love new subscribers to my YouTube Channel, as it helps me keep making those videos!

Materials:

100-250 yds #4 med worsted weight yarn, I used Red Heart with Love* in Brown and and a little bit of White

5mm (H) hook*, or hook necessary for gauge

yarn needle* and scissors

stitch markers* are helpful to mark that first st of each round so you know where to join.

Gauge:

Rounds 1-6 = 4.25” diameter

Crochet hat in brown with white laces like football and cork tag.

Notes:

  1. When working in the round, I prefer to Ch 1 to start my hdc rounds, as it creates a better join with less of a hole. This Ch 1 does not count as a stitch. If Ch 2 is more comfortable for you then by all means use it!
  2. The football laces are sewn on with white yarn and needle after the hat is complete.
  3. This is a basic hdc beanie pattern that is worked top down.
  4. The hat is worked in the round, joining the last st to the first st at the end of each round with a ss.
  5. However, only for the brown round following the white round you will still join the round in the same manner BUT you will turn the hat (like you would when working in rows), and crochet back the other way. This allows you to crochet into the 3rd loop of the hdc, which is on the back of the hdc stitch-see pictures below.

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

Mc-magic circle

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

hdc – half double crochet

3rd loop hdc – is the vertical loop on the back of the hdc stitch, check out the 3rd loop Tutorial here.
