Crochet Iris Stitch Free Photo Tutorial + How to Video

Learn how to crochet the lovely iris stitch. This easy and beautiful crochet stitch creates a draping fabric that makes great garments, hats and scarves.

This tutorial includes both written instructions and step by step photos. There is also a video tutorial on how to crochet the iris stitch.

The beautiful stitch has a floral look and is made with basic stitches. That means it’s a beginner friendly stitch pattern!

I love working with cotton yarn, it’s one of my favorite things about summer crocheting! There are so many gorgeous stitches and patterns to try in different yarns.

I enjoy seeing how each one works up a little differently and how some combinations just pop!

The iris stitch works up splendidly in my Incrocio Cowl pattern. It’s a lacy, one skein crochet cowl that’s a stunning summer accessory.

This is one of my favorite stitches. It’s also one of the easiest crochet stitches and a great stitch for summer lace.

Materials

Any weight yarn and corresponding size hook

I’m using my favorite 5mm (H) Clover Amour* and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Camel* for this tutorial.

Notes

The stitch multiple is 4, plus 3 for your foundation chain.

To adjust the width of your swatch, you can add or subtract to my starting chain in 4s.

Length is adjustable by repeating more or less rows.

Written Instructions

Chain 15, to adjust this number you can add or subtract in 4s.

Row 1. Skip the first 4 chs, all in the 5th chain from your hook place (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), *Skip the next 3 chs, all in the next ch place (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), rep from * across until the last two sts, then skip 1 ch and dc in the last, turn.

Row 2. Ch 3, Skip the next two dcs, *all in the next chain 1 space: place (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), skip next 4 dcs, rep from * until the last 2 dcs, skip 2 dcs and dc in 3rd ch, turn.

Row 3. Ch 3, skip the first two dcs, *all in the next ch 1 space:  place (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc), skip the next 4 dcs, rep from * until the last 2 dcs, skip those 2 dcs and dc in 3rd ch, turn.

Continue to repeat Row 3 for the desired length. It’s just a one row repeat from here!

  • Any weight yarn and corresponding size hook
  • I’m using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Camel for this tutorial. This is a #4 medium worsted weight yarn.

Tools

  • Any weight yarn and corresponding size hook
  • I’m using my 5mm (H) Clover Amour.

Instructions

    1. For the foundation row, chain a stitch multiple of 4, plus 3 for your starting chain. Here I chain 15, to adjust this number you can add or subtract in 4s to your chain stitches. Chain for iris stitch tutorial.
