Free Stash Busting Crochet Scarf Pattern For Summer

Sharing is caring!

This Colorblock Cowl crochet pattern is the perfect stash buster for those warm summer months. You need just one leftover yarn skein (or less!) for this crochet project.

This easy to crochet cowl is also easy to customize. This means it’s a great way to use anything from your yarn stash. When you combine colors of your choosing, they create the perfect project just for you.

I crocheted this cowl in four colors, but of course you could adjust the number of colors or even choose one solid color.  The best thing about designing patterns, is seeing them come to life in your hands!

You might also like to use lightweight yarn like in the Trina Cowl. I love crochet cowls for spring and summer! They make great gifts for teachers, neighbors and friends.

Or maybe you’re thinking thicker yarns because you’re getting ready for fall and winter makes. Then you’ll love the one skein Sheila Cowl in my favorite chunky yarn and simple stitches.

Crochet granny squares are another fun way to use up leftover yarn scraps. Then you can join them up into a scarf or blanket!

The Finestra is a pretty shawl pattern worked in two colors of yarn.

The Yarn

This infinity scarf was designed with a series of one skein cotton cowls. The type of yarn I chose is Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton* and used 1 ball for each. This scrappy block scarf was pulled together with little bit from each one.

This is one of my favorite cottons. I love the color choices and it has a beautiful sheen to it. This color block scarf is a great stash buster it uses just small bits of yarn from each ball. I was still able to create 4 other cowls with each of them.

You can substitute a cotton blend yarn or any yarn you have on hand. If you’re participating in a stash busting challenge you want to use what’s in your stash for sure!

Crochet cowl in multiple colors wrapped around woman's neck.

Materials:

186 yds of #4 worsted weight cotton yarn divided in 4 colors (about 45 yds each), I used Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton* in Lilac, Navy, Jade and Camel.

5mm (H) hook*

scissors & yarn needle

Stitches/Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s)

sk – skip the indicated stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc – single crochet

rep – repeat

exec – extended single crochet

Special Stitch

pike stitch

In my Hygge Homebody Crochet Cardigan I also use the same stitch and I love working it. It works up super fast and is easy to remember.

I created a video tutorial below of how to start from your chain and get you through the 3rd row, which is all you need, then it’s a simple repeat to work up the rest of your cowl. If changing colors is new for you, see some of my tips on changing colors in crochet.

Gauge

2″x 2″ = 7 sc x 6 rows of sc

Finished Dimensions

Finished Dimensions: 4″ x 52″

Notes

  • To adjust the width of your cowl, your starting chain should be an even number of stitches, plus 2 for the foundation.
  • Ch 1 at the start of the row does not count as a st.
  • Ch 3 counts as sc +ch 1, I recommend a standing stitch.

Adjustments

There are different ways to crochet a scarf in a circle. This easy crochet scarf pattern is worked in short rows, increasing the length as you go. So the great thing is if you wanted to leave it as a long, skinny scarf you could do that.

Or maybe add fringe if you like. As a cowl, you’ll sew the short ends together with your yarn needle.

Watch the Video Tutorial

I take you through this cowl from the first row through the third row in the video tutorial below, which is all you need to work this quick little cowl up. Check out the full video on YouTube and don’t forget to subscribe so I can keep creating videos!

If you’re looking for another great project to try in cotton yarn then the Juliet crochet coaster is super pretty. I choose a neutral but it would look amazing in bright colors like these for summer.
