Toddler Crochet Cocoon Shrug Pattern

Learn how to crochet a toddler size cardigan featuring the bobble stitch. This crochet cocoon shrug is a free pattern below!

I’m super excited to finally be sharing this toddler cocoon shrug pattern with you. This little cocoon shrug is great for a fall sweater and also makes a great spring sweater.

For this crochet cocoon shrug I wanted a combination of open and texture, so I combined filet crochet with the bobble stitch. Since filet is so open it really creates a more subtle effect with the bobble that I really like.

I used Caron Simply Soft Tweed in taupe for the main body and gold for the trim. The main body uses exactly a skein and the trim was just a partial skein of the gold. I really loving working with this yarn.

It’s acrylic, which means it’s easy to wash and wear. Simply Soft is a #4 weight, but seems lighter and smoother than other worsted weights. The solid colors have a beautiful sheen to them. As I write this I’m fantasizing about another project I have in mind for this yarn!

Anyhow, this is a fun, quick project to work up for your little one. I added a button, but it’s not necessary as the shrug sits nicely on the shoulders.

With right side facing you, lay out rectangle lengthwise (like a hotdog as we used to say to the kids when I was a teacher :)) with short ends at the top and bottom.

Bring corners together by folding top right corner down into the center, then folding bottom right corner up into the center, matching them together.

Using a yarn/tapestry needle and a length of matching yarn, sew the two edges together for 12 rows or 6″ to form the sleeve opening.
