Free Crochet Toddler Hoodie Pattern

Sharing is caring!

I chose to create this crochet hoodie for my little lady’s birthday gift. It worked up so fast and easy! Truly, just a couple of crocheted rectangles, joined to form a garment. Who knew it was that easy?!

I figured starting with a toddler size was the best way to jump into making my first crochet hoodie, since it’s a small piece! My son is already asking for one, so I’m excited to make that happen for his February birthday. Which also means I’ll hopefully be able to share another size with you. Although this is such a simple crochet hoodie that I bet you could size it up or down easily on your own!

I used Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton so it’s machine washable and kid friendly in every way (that’s a must in my house, can you relate?)! The color options for Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton yarn are simply gorgeous. I may have bought a few more colors than I needed… but hey now I’ll need to come up with something to make with them!

This was my first time working with this yarn and it was easy peasy-no splitting, smooth gliding. It has a nice sheen to it that I really like. I paired up jade and goldenrod for my hoodie, but you could choose a more neutral palette-those are just as luscious.

I actually started this project while waiting at the DMV. It was a long line, longer than normal. I guess the day before the system was down so it was even busier than usual. I’m glad I had my crochet bag and a project ready!

People were laughing, speculating that I might finish an entire outfit before we got through the line. Thankfully, I did not, but I was so glad to have something to do to keep my hands busy! This is the tote bag I use from Hobby Lobby and it has served me well.

Materials:

Lion Brand’s 24/7 cotton* 5 balls of jade* and 1 ball of goldenrod

Hook G*

yarn needle* for sewing rectangles together and weaving in ends

2-2″ buttons, I got mine at Joann’s but I couldn’t find a link. I am partial to these coconut shell buttons* and use them often! If you want to add more buttons plan to add more button holes when you get to the edging.

Gauge:

4 dc X 2 rows = 1″

Sizing:

Fits toddlers size 12-18 months

Finished measurements:

Hood measures 7.5″l x 7″w

The back measures-11″ wide, 12.25″ tall (from bottom to the bottom of the hood)

Front panels-17″ long from top of shoulder to bottom front, 3.75″ wide

Sewing:

When sewing your crochet hoodie pieces you will put two pieces (or sides) together with the right* sides touching, so that you will be sewing on the inside of the pieces. This will give you a seam on the inside of the hoodie and a clean line on the outside, just as your store bought clothes are sewn together.

*the right side of fabric (in this case crocheted fabric) is what we see, the outside of the garment, the pretty side. Some crochet pieces, especially when worked in rows don’t have a definite right or wrong side. The cuffs of this hoodie have post stitches, which do have a right side and a wrong or back side. You want the posts showing when worn, so when sewing put the side of the fabric with the posts on it together (right sides together). This way once you’ve sewn the cuffs together, the seam lays on the inside of the hoodie.

The Hood Pattern:

1. Ch 53, dc in 3rd ch from your hook and in each ch across. (51)

2. Ch 2 (doesn’t count), dc across, turn. (51)

For rows 3-15 repeat row 2.

Leave a long tail for sewing the short ends together. Fold your rectangle in half, bring the two short ends (7″wide ends) together.

Match up each stitch and then use your long tail and yarn needle to sew them together. Weave in end and set hood aside.

The Back Panel Pattern:

1. Ch 43, dc into the 3rd ch from your hook and in each ch across, turn. (41)

2. Ch 2 (doesn’t count), dc into the same stitch and each stitch across, turn. (41)

Continue to repeat Row 2 for 28 more rows. Don’t finish off, you’ll continue for the front panel below:

The Front Panel Pattern:

Row 29: Ch 2 (doesn’t count), dc in the same stitch, and dc in the next 13 stitches, turn (14). I placed a stitch marker to remind myself where to stop.

Repeat row 29 for rows 30-66. Cut yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing the side seams.

crochet hoodie

Attach yarn on opposite side of the back panel at row 29 to form the second front panel.

Now repeat rows 29-66, cut yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing the side seams.

Set your piece aside.

Sew on the Hood:

Attach the hood by sewing it on in the same manner. Find the center of the back panel and the center of the back of the hoodie. Match these two up and pin in place. I find the T-pins* to be so helpful with pinning crochet pieces.

Sew on the hood so the left side of the bottom of the hood joins to the left top of the back and onto the shoulder and front panel edge, and likewise, the right side of the bottom of the hood attaches to the top of the right side of the back panel, shoulder and front panel.

The Sleeves Pattern:

Fold the hoodie in half lengthwise-laying the front panels on top of one another (kind of like a superman pose)

Row 1: Attach your yarn with a ss to row 25 of the back panel(shown above by my hook). Place 30 dc evenly along the edge until row 14, or until you reach 8,” turn. (30) Shown above by the stitch marker.

2. Ch 2 (doesn’t count), dc in same and in each dc, turn. (30)

Repeat row 2 until your sleeve measures 6″ long. Cut yarn and leave a long tail if you didn’t already do so for the front panel.

The right sleeve is about halfway complete here.

Now move to the other side and repeat the above steps for the other sleeve.

Left Sleeve:

Attach goldenrod to the wrong side of the hoodie, in the bottom right corner of the left sleeve.

2. Ch 2, dc in the same, *{FPDC in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch} repeat from * across, turn.

Sew your cuffs:

Match up the cuffs, with the right side to right side (side with the post stitches), use your long tail and yarn needle to sew just the cuffs together, leaving the rest of the sleeve open for now. Cut goldenrod and weave in ends.

Sew Your Sleeves/Side Seams:

Using the long jade tail from the sleeves, sew your side seams together, match the stitches row to row all the way down, continue to sewing the side seams together as well. Cut jade yarn and weave in ends. Repeat for the other sleeve/side.

Edging:

The edging is worked in the round, not rows. You will crochet around the entire edge of the garment.

With right side facing you, attach goldenrod to the bottom of the back panel.

Round 1: Ch 2, dc in the same and in each stitch all the way around the bottom, up the front of the front panel, along the outside front of the hood and back down the front panel and finally on to the bottom edge again, join with a ss to the 1st dc you started with. Place 3 dc in each corner to keep them square.

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in the same stitch, *(FPDC in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch) repeat from * around, placing 3 dc in the corners, join with ss.

crochet hoodie

Round 3: Repeat round 2, but add button holes: starting in the row that is even with the arm pit, ch 6 (or more or less depending on the size of your buttons-it’s a good idea to check the button fit), skip 6 stitches and join to the next stitch with a ss. Continue to follow the *{fpdc, dc} pattern for 6 more stitches, then create a second button hole in the same manner, continue on with the *{fpdc, dc} pattern to finish the round.

crochet hoodie

Round 4: Repeat round 2 again, but when you get to the button holes just DC into each chain, then continue with the *{fpdc, dc} pattern around.

crochet hoodie

Sew buttons on opposite panel, across from button holes. Weave in all ends.
