How to Crochet a Cross in Bobbles Pocket Prayer Cloth

Learn how to crochet a cross using the bobble stitch. This pocket prayer cloth makes a great gift for anyone.

This small crochet rectangle is perfect for placing in your pocket. The crochet cross is made in bobble stitch.

Pocket pray cloth crochet pattern with cross in green.

Materials

  • 50 yds divided in two contrasting colors of #4 med worsted weight yarn,* I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in green (Color B) and purple (Color A). For the one I use in the video tutorial I use Red Heart in Lilac (Color A) and Aran (Color B).
  • 5mm hook US Size H*
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

My favorite Hooks are Furls* and Clover*!

Skill Level

Intermediate

The bobble stitches make this one an intermediate level pattern. However, if you are an adventurous beginner who’s got the basics down and willing to learn special stitches then you can make this. Plus there’s a video to help you too.

Gauge

1” 2.5 cm x 1”/ 2.5 cm = 3.5 sc x 4 rows

Size

Finished prayer cloth measures 5.75” / 14.5 cm x 4.5” / 11.5 cm.

Stitches/Abbreviations (US Terms)

ch (s) – chain (s)

rep – repeat

RS – right side  

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st (s) – stitch (es)

WS – wrong side

Special Stitches

Bobble: yarn over & insert hook into stitch to be worked, *{yarn over & pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)}, repeat from * 4 more times (loops on hook will increase 1 each time, end with 6 loops on hook), yarn over & pull through all 6 loops on hook.

Notes

  1. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  2. When changing colors, finish the stitch before with the new color. This tutorial covers all stitches including bobble stitch! Crochet over the old color and pick it up again when needed. See my post on color changing tips for more details.

How to Crochet a Cross Prayer Cloth

A free crochet pattern for a pocket size prayer cloth featuring a crochet cross in bobbles.

Materials

  • Two contrasting colors of #4 medium worsted weight yarn. I chose I Love This Yarn in Mid Green (Color B) and I Love This Yarn in Purple (Color A).

Tools

  • 5mm (H) hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions

In Color A Ch 14.

  1. Row 1: Sc into 2nd chain from hook and each ch across, turn. (13 sts)
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across, turn. (13 sts)
  3. Row 3: (WS) Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 5 sts, change to Color B on last st, bobble stitch in next st, change to Color A on last yo of bobble, sc in last 6 stitches, turn. (13 sts) Carry Color B yarn up through the center to pick it up for each bobble stitch.
  4. Row 4: (RS) Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across, turn (13 sts) Now repeat the last 2 rows until you have 4 bobbles.Purple single crochet with white bobbles stacked 3 high.
  5. Rows 5 - 10: Rep Rows 3 - 4.
  6. You will need to join new yarn for Color B in the next row.
  7. Row 11 : Ch 1, sc in same st and in next st, change to Color B, *{bobble in next st, sc in next st} rep from * 4X, bobble in next st, change to Color A sc in last 2 sts, turn. (13 sts) You'll have 5 bobbles across with single crochets between in the same color. Only your first two and last two sc of the row are in Color A.
    Repeat Rows 3 - 4 for 3 more bobbles.
  8. Rows 12 - 18: Rep Rows 3 - 4.
  9. Row 19: Rep Row 4.

Border:

  1. Sc evenly around, in the first corner place: *{sc, ch 1, sc},
  2. Continue to sc evenly around, crocheting one sc in each row.
  3. Rep * for each corner.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc and fasten off.
  5. Weave in ends.
