My kids have been clamoring for these crochet flags. I’ve been frantically trying to finish them for the Fourth.

I’m especially excited for my littlest to have flags to wave around. Just because they’re too young for sparklers this fourth of July doesn’t mean they can’t show their American pride.

These are super fast. It’s an easy pattern that appeals to all skill levels. I love how the variegated blue yarn turned out in the blue square.

It has just enough white to represent the stars. These crochet flags are fun for littles to wave around on Independence Day, and they look great as decor too.

Such a quick crochet project. Which is perfect, if I’m going to hand them over to my kids.

Since I use variegated white and blue colors I opted not to add stars. Given that this is a small flag pattern, using buttons for white stars like Golden Lucy Crafts on her Patriotic Snow Globe is a perfect choice!

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (4) in red, white and blue.
  • I used what I had in my stash: Red Heart Super Saver in Soft White, & Cherry Red, Blue Variegated
  • Dowels* – 1/4″ wide, 12″ long
  • US Size I – 9 / 5.5 mm hook size*
  • Optional-buttons, or wood beads or wood finial to glue on to the ends of dowel to keep the flag from sliding off.

Notes

To get this flag started I use foundation single crochet. If this technique is above your crochet skill level, there is a quick photo tutorial below. Or get the detailed instructions with video tutorial here Foundation Single Crochet.

Be sure to carry your red and white yarns, crocheting over them as you go. Then you can pick them back up when you’re ready for the next row in that color. No need to join red yarn every other row. Get the detail tutorial on how to change colors at the end of a row here.

You can just drop the blue yarn (no need to carry it) and pick it back up. See the seamless color change method here. This just leaves a beginning tail and ending tail to weave in.

The flag will curl at the edges after it’s worked. I felt it was a little too much (even for a flag) so I blocked it overnight. Instructions for blocking are included in the tutorial below.
