Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Themed Birthday Party

Sharing is caring!

Create a custom kid’s birthday party based on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Easy to make decor ideas with themed activities for young party goers.

My littlest man’s favorite ABC book is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Loves it. We also have a compilation dvd of books, with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom as the featured title.

It’s not really a movie, but more like the pages of the book set to music. He can not get enough of it. The problem is, it’s short. Like 2-3 year old attention span short. So on long car trips, hearing the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom song gets mind numbing. But hey, it’s educational and he sings along. So cute.

Anyway, he loves this book and since his 3rd birthday was approaching I decided to use Chicka Chicka Boom Boom as our theme. I usually try to design our parties around what my kids are into, at the moment, which is subject to change. And does.

Plus I’m a sucker for book themed parties. Since you can’t go out and buy a party set for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom specifically, I’m here to share what we did to create it.

Invites

First I made the invite by taking a picture of our copy of the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book. I saw a paper invitation on Etsy with the wording from the book, “A told B, and B told C, “I’ll meet you at {          } birthday party. Chica Chica boom boom, how’d that happen so soon?”

It was sold out so I personalized it myself. There are a couple of other Etsy shops offering digital files of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom birthday invites.

Decor

I found a free Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activity pack here.

I printed this off and created a birthday banner using the ABCs. As the ABC cards themselves are small, I traced a banner template on to green card stock and cut those out.

I got two banner pieces from each sheet, with some left over.

Then I glued the letters “Happy Birthday” onto the green pieces and glued those to a piece of baker’s twine.

And there’s your custom birthday banner. I picked up the palm tree at our local party supply, and added some brown balloon for coconuts.

The ‘3’ is leftover from another party. It’s hand drawn and cut from cardboard. I wrapped it in garden twine, hot gluing it in place as I went.

The leftover pieces of card stock resembled tree leaves so I used them for coconut trees. I cut opposing slits into one end, one coming down from the flat edge and one coming up from the jagged edge, about an inch from the end.

Then I fit the two pieces together, sliding the slits into one another.

I glued the third “leaf” into place, folding and gluing these flaps so all three leaves were joined at the center.

Fit together as triangle.

Looks like the leaves of a coconut tree, with the flat edges up so I could tape it to the ceiling. I was able to make three “trees” with the leftover card stock pieces.

Hang from ceiling yardstick leaves, balloon coconuts and brown streamers.

To finish the trees, I taped brown streamers on. I chose to make my trees short so the little ones wouldn’t tear them down right away!

My preschoolers helped draw black circles on the brown balloons, transforming them into coconuts! They loved being my big helpers.

I stapled the balloons to the card stock leaves. This was easy to do, used leftover supplies and cheap party decor-win win!

I used the leftover ABC cards for an activity, but you could stick some to the streamers like they are climbing up the tree.

I didn’t go crazy on the decor. One other little thing my husband actually did was stick a paper towel tube and two green balloons to our front door. It’s metal so he could spell the birthday boy’s name ‘climbing’ up the tree. Our, now 3 year old, has recently learned to recognize his name so loved this!

Well before the party, I take care of anything that doesn’t have to be done on the ‘day of.’ Did I mention, I have four kids ages 5 and under? I don’t really have time for last minute!

I knew I wanted give ABC puzzles for the favor. We love these around my house. I especially love that lowercase is available. It’s hard to find preschool materials with lowercase letters.

While shopping for those at the Dollar Tree, I saw these reusable grocery bags and picked them up. They fit the puzzles perfectly and I tweaked them to fit the theme.

I used some orange washi tape to make the kids’ names climbing the tree. Cheap, quick, easy and custom tailored to the theme and each kid.

I also included mini ‘Scrabble” Cheez-it crackers in their goodies bags. They also got to keep their coconut cups, which I picked up from the party supply store.

Under the tree they say something like, “save the earth.” I covered that crazy message up (haha- I jest) with green duct tape (also found at the Dollar Tree) and wrote Chica Chica Boom Boom in marker, yes I misspelled Chicka! But there is a Spanish version of the book Chica Chica Bum Bum, so there’s that to cover my mistake.

Food:

I set up the table so I could have their ‘coconut tree’ snack ready.

Activities

The kids were all pretty young so I set up activities in one room where they move from one to another as they liked.

The younger the kids, the less structured activity I make. I used anything ABC themed we had a home.

Letters and speller in blue basket.
A LeapFrog Letter Factory toy was perfect for little hands.
Playdo and letters in clear bin.
I wrapped green pipe cleaners on wood pencils to represent trees. My preschoolers (and Dad) helped roll playdough balls and we added our ABC molds.
Coconut tree taped on white easel with letters in tray.
The tree came from the free activity print out. The sticker letters were leftover from a craft. Set it up on our easel and it was a perfect height for the little ones.

This activity was an after thought and it ended up being the most popular!

My preschoolers (and Dad) hid the letters for the kids to find. They weren’t into this one as much as I thought, but again pretty structured activity for littles, and letter matching is work!

The last themed piece was the cake. I made a marble cake in a 9×13 dish and my husband decorated it. He’s a bit of an artist so I utilize his skills when I can.

Oh, and I made his party hat in complimentary colors.

He had so much fun with his friends and I had fun designing it.
