Sewing Pattern Review Alex and Anna Kids Winter PJs

Sharing is caring!

I absolutely love this adorable pajama pattern. My kids live in them. Seriously, who needs real clothes when you can wear comfy pajamas all day?

They also love new pajamas. In the past I’ve embroidered their names, which they go nuts for! I don’t know what’s with kids and their names, but mine love seeing theirs in print anywhere… everywhere.

I purchased this instant download pattern from a shop on Etsy* a few years ago, and I’m still using it. I love how much easier it is to keep up with a downloaded pdf sewing pattern than the classic paper patterns. Well they take up less space anyway.

The Fabrics

This year I chose fabrics that were in keeping with each of my kids’ likes. I found some amazing knits at Sahara Fabrics. I actually stocked up over the summer, intending to make everyone pajamas for Christmas.

These look super cute with an embroidered feather on the right side (stabilizer on the inside).

Alas, life got in the way and I only ended up making my summer birthday boy his pajamas. Then birthday season hit (we have Dec., Jan., Feb., and March!) and I got busy sewing up some pajamas. Phew, finally used up those amazing fabrics!

And my kids love them. Did I mention that? They are over the moon that I made something just for them. I have to say it feels pretty good to have them express gratitude for handmade items! And it makes me want to sew up a few more, win-win.

The Alex and Anna Pajamas Pattern Review

So the Alex and Anna Winter PJs* pass the kids’ comfort test, which is obviously the most important criteria! It also passes the ‘busy mom of four with about 30 seconds to sew before someone wakes up from nap’ test. Ha! But really, it’s a great pattern. The pictures are so helpful if you’re new.

Even if you’re new to sewing, this is a fabulous pattern. It comes with a photo tutorial that walks you through each step. The written instructions are concise and clear. The pattern is computer generated and each size is color coded. This pattern comes in sizes 3mos-12years, which is a big seller for me! It’s definitely a pattern I will use for years to come.

Another reason this pattern is easy to use is the way it’s put together. The cuffs, neckband and elastic sizes are all charted up and easy to reference. I’ve actually saved the pattern pieces from the sizes I’ve made in baggies for easy storage. Everything I need fits right into the baggie and I have them organized by size.

This was the first time I had worked with a panel of fabric. I love having one main image on the front and coordinating pieces. To keep it center I used my embroidery hoop grid. It has little holes for marking with disappearing ink. This made it easy to center the design before cutting. A ruler works just as well too.

Working with knits tips:

Last summer I was also blessed with a secondhand serger. I love it. It’s an amazing piece of equipment. It’s a Juki Mo 654DE.* I have loved getting to know my new machine, although I still have tons to learn!

But, I bought this pattern well before I had my glorious serger. So if you are working on a sewing machine, this pattern is still great.

To mimic a serger on a sewing machine you use a zig zag stitch to finish the seams. I did invest in a double needle for my sewing machine which makes hemming and finishing knits a breeze!

You can also add hem tape, like this one Dritz 222 5/8-Inch by 20-Yard Stitch Witchery, Regular* to the hem of your pajama top which works like a stabilizer and makes it easier to hem.

My kids love their pajamas that I’ve made from the Alex and Anna Winter PJs pattern. And I love working with the pattern.

Now that I’ve finished this round of pajamas, I can start fabric shopping for the next round! As much as I hate how quickly my kids grow and change, at least I get to keep making new clothes for them!

What’s your favorite pajama pattern?
